Nesting R&D: continuous improvements to save more material

Alma is one of the very few CAD/CAM software publishers to develop, maintain and continuously improve its own nesting algorithms in-house. This expertise has been built over decades and allows our R&D teams to continuously improve the performance of our nesting technology. With each Almacam release, we work on new ways to optimize material utilization and help manufacturers reduce material consumption.

Almacam 4.1.3 continues this work with developments of tube nesting.

Tube nesting: a new foundation for future optimization

Almacam 4.1.3 introduces a new version of our tube nesting algorithm.

Rather than being only a performance improvement for this release, this development provides a new technical foundation for our tube nesting technology. The new architecture is easier for our R&D team to improve and extend, allowing us to develop future optimizations more efficiently.

It is an important step in the continuous development of Almacam Tube and its nesting capabilities.

Tube programming: more flexibility without losing automation

Almacam Tube is designed to automate as much of the programming process as possible, reducing repetitive manual work for programmers. However, some parts require specific adjustments. This is particularly true for profiles with unusual or irregular sections.

With Almacam 4.1.3, programmers have greater flexibility when manually modifying tube preparations. They can now save the configuration of a free-profile task and reuse it when another tube with the same section is encountered.

This combines automation with the ability to retain specific programming choices, avoiding the need to repeat the same manual adjustments for similar parts.

2D Cut: nesting preview

A new function has been introduced in Almacam 2D Cut to explore nesting layouts. Now, programmers can interact with the layout to select an individual part or all parts with the same geometry.

This provides a convenient visual check of the nesting and can also support production operations : for example, operators can use the layout to identify specific parts when preparing or validating unloading operations.

Green roadmap: estimate the carbon footprint of 2D parts

Once the required environmental parameters have been configured, Almacam can now estimate the carbon footprint associated with produced 2D parts. This gives manufacturers additional information to assess the environmental impact of their production alongside their existing manufacturing data.

Almacam Robotics: continuing to expand robotic programming capabilities

Almacam Robotics is Alma’s offline programming solution for robotic cutting and welding cells. It allows manufacturers to prepare and simulate robot programs in a virtual environment, without having to program each job directly on the production cell.

With Almacam 4.1.3, we have continued to expand the capabilities available for robotic programming, particularly for welding. Among the new features introduced in this release, users can now:

  • Import and manage tooling directly within welding projects, making it easier to include the custom fixtures used to hold parts during welding.
  • Generate Workshop documents for welding projects, providing production teams with the information they need on the workshop floor.
  • Import an existing welding project into another project, including its parts and programs. This can be useful, for example, to complete an assembly by adding a missing part together with its associated programming data.
